RCS Message Types & Templates

Text Messages

Simple text messages remain the foundation of RCS messaging. These messages support up to several thousand characters of text and can be paired with suggested actions like quick reply buttons.

  • Up to ~2000 characters of text
  • Can include suggested reply actions or buttons
  • Used for basic notifications, confirmations, reminders, and conversational exchanges

Rich Cards

Rich Cards enable visually engaging messages including both media and interaction elements. These are excellent for showcasing products, promotions, or rich content previews.

  • Includes a title, text, and media content (image or video)
  • Supports up to 4 actionable buttons (e.g., URLs, quick replies)
  • Media must be hosted at a publicly accessible URL
  • Image and video limits typically enforce file size caps (e.g., up to 100 MB total)

Carousel Messages

Carousels allow multiple rich cards in a single RCS message that users can scroll through horizontally. This format is ideal for multi-product displays or step-by-step content.

  • Each card in the carousel functions like an individual rich card
  • Supports interactive elements, images, and buttons
  • Total carousel media must respect carrier file size limits

Suggested Actions & Buttons

Suggested actions enhance engagement by guiding recipients to take predefined actions without typing. Common suggested actions include:

  • Quick replies — buttons that users can tap to reply instantly
  • Open URL — opens a web page or deep link in the device browser
  • Location requests — prompts users to share location data
  • Phone dial actions — initiates a call when tapped

RCS Message Templates

Templates provide a pre-approved message format you can reuse for consistent, compliant campaigns. Depending on region and carrier, certain templates may need registration before use.

  • Use templates for high-volume or repetitive messaging
  • Templates help ensure regulatory compliance in regions where templates are required
  • Templates may include structured rich card formats with predefined buttons
